2 John – Love One Another
In our take-charge culture, John’s words fall hard. Running ahead with initiative might work in the corporate world, but in spiritual matters humility and submission work best. Addressed to one of the ladies who hosted the church in her home, John penned his second letter to reiterate the points of his first in a more personal manner.
In short, truth matters—and it is summed up in Jesus Christ. Since He is the One who created us and knows all things, He is the only One worth following. Others may creatively devise other philosophies or strategies of godliness, but they lack power because they are based in lies. John urged the lady and her family to hold firmly to the gospel of Christ’s sufficiency and to live lives characterized by God’s love that holds them. In the end, their fruit will silence the futile efforts made by others to circumvent God’s simple plan: salvation by faith alone in His Son.
